Key Authentication Techniques for Your for Business

Each time you send an email from your business, a host of automatic processes kick in to authenticate it.

Email providers like Gmail and Microsoft utilise sophisticated algorithms to assess the authenticity of every email.

Their main goal is to eliminate spam and phishing emails—deceptive messages pretending to originate from legitimate sources but actually direct recipients to harmful sites where their personal information is compromised.

How to authenticate emails

To authenticate emails, three critical methods are implemented:

SPF (Sender Policy Framework)

Consider SPF as an exclusive list for authorised email senders. The email system refers to this list each time you send an email. If your address is on the list, your email goes through. If not, you may be marked as an imposter, and your email could be blocked.

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

DKIM serves as a unique identifier or signature on your emails. When recipients receive your email, they look for this identifier. Its presence assures them that the email is genuinely from you and has not been altered.

DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance)

DMARC outlines what to do with emails that lack the DKIM identifier or aren't listed under SPF. It provides instructions on whether to reject, quarantine, or deliver these emails, but with a warning to the recipient to check its validity.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of businesses are not correctly configured

As of February 2024, leading email services such as Gmail and Yahoo require businesses to implement DKIM and DMARC to ensure proper email delivery.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of businesses are not correctly configured and are unaware that their emails are being blocked.
